Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is also often referred to as digital eye strain. It refers to a group of eye conditions caused by excessive or prolonged use of a digital screen on a computer monitor, a laptop, a tablet or a mobile phone. Common symptoms associated with this condition include; blurred vision, headaches, eye strain, dry irritated eyes, fatigue and neck & shoulder pains.

Staring at a computer screen for hours on end has become a part of the modern workday for many of us and this puts undue strain on the eyes. It is actually very similar to carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive stress injuries you can get at work. It occurs when you are repeatedly carrying out the same motion over and over again. Exactly the same as other repetitive stress injuries, computer vision syndrome will usually get worse the longer you continue to carry out the activity.

Research shows that computer related eye problems are now common place. It shows that between fifty-percent and ninety-percent of people who work on a computer have at least some, if not all, of the symptoms associated with computer vision syndrome.

The main causes of Computer Vision syndrome are operating in an environment with poor or inadequate lighting, improper viewing distances from the devices screen, the glare from the devices screen, poor seating posture or uncorrected visual problems like far-sightedness, astigmatism, inadequate eye focusing or eye coordination abilities, and ageing changes of the eyes, such as presbyopia.

Working on your computer is much more challenging to your eyes than reading a book. While looking at your computer screen your eyes also have to contend with varying contrast, screen-flicker and glare. Computer vision syndrome is also more likely to occur if you already suffer from an existing eye disorder such as an astigmatism or near-sightedness. Also if you need prescription glasses but don’t wear them or if you are wearing the wrong prescription glasses which aren’t designed for you to use on your computer.

When looking at your computer, your eyes have to continuously focus, moving backwards and forwards, to align with what you are viewing on your screen. Also you may have to keep looking down at papers and then back up to your screen again to type. Your eyes also have to keep refocusing according to the ever-changing images on the screen in order to create a clear picture for your brain to interpret. All of these different activities require a lot of effort from your eye muscles which over time will become strained.

An Invaluable Vision Tip- the 10-10-10 Rule

Prolonged computer use can cause irreparable damage to your distant vision. Every hour that you spend sat at your computer can contribute to a deterioration in your vision. Extended computer use causes ‘near point stress’ and a decreased blink rate resulting in insufficient tear flow which leads to dry and irritated eyes.

Every time that you are sat at your computer screen for ten consecutive minutes you should ‘Look Away’ and focus on something that is at least ten feet away from you for at least a period of ten seconds. Hence the name; 10-10-10. By doing this very simple exercise it allows the internal ciliary eye muscles to expand for a few seconds which helps to relieve the near point stress. By simply performing this very simple eye exercise every ten minutes could have a very profound effect on helping to preserve your eye sight for many years to come.

To help you to remember this very simple tip we have produced an Ethos Vision ‘Look Away’ mouse mat, pictured above, which can be ordered online from Amazon – Click Here.
